That's my layout. o.o Well, the text probably won't be green. >.>

I've never coded a layout before, and I have no. idea. where to start. Feel free to tell me to go look up tutorials and stuff. >.> I'll probably go do that now, myself.

Feel free to critique the layout itself. Especially the color scheme... I'm torn.

What I want/things to keep in mind
  • Text links
  • .gif images
  • Nothing that will take forever to load

OH, and I'm using FreeWebs, so I can't use...CSS, I think. >_> I'll check on that.

Thanks, guys! \o/

You CAN use css on freewebs. You need to swtich to an html account, but that means you can't switch back to a template account. I explained it in this thread in the workshop area.

Okay, first thing that comes to my mind is that you can use the while image as a background, put a content div layer on the content area, and maybe use buttons or an image map for the links in the left bottom.

That's because I hate slicing an image.

See ninique's thread with suggestions and tutorials.

So you want to use text links instead of the links you out on the image? Then it should be even easier.

I'd split the layout in two parts first, a left and a right side. Then make another div inside the leftside and create your text links there. You can choose to have an iframe on the right side, so you dont have to re-code every page.

Does that make sense, or do I need to explain stuff further?

*hugs*

Just start with a basic HTML page, with
Code: Select all
<html>
<head>
<title>Blu Pen</title>
</head>

<body>

</body>
</html>

That should always be your starting point. I'll get the basic code for this layout up for you in a few minutes.

I took my sidenav layout as a starting point and modified it for your background image.

You will need to put your layout image, or background image, in a seperate folder called 'img'. You can also add an img for the list, if you like. In the CSS below, you'll see a definition of the list, with ain img called 'star.gif'. This will appear in front of any list, if you use it. If you don't want to, you can safely just take all of the list stuff out.

You will ALSO need a seperate folder for your css (name it main.css in the folder css).

Also, I have not tested this on anything else but firefox. We may need to tweak it, to work on IE, Chrome and Safari.

Here is your HTML index page, WITH an iframe:

Code: Select all
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<title>My First Site | Freedom Finally</title>
<!-- You can change the title if you like -->

<meta name="description" content="Daenelia made this site for a workshop on Glam, as an example.">
<meta name="keywords" content="doll, dolls, dollz, digital dolls, pixel dolls, pixels, fashion, fantasy">
<!-- You can change the description text and keywords if you like -->

<link href="css/main.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
</head>

<body>

<!-- Freewebs Sticker insert here if using webs.com-->

<!-- This is where the index page is created-->

   <div id="middle">
   <!-- You can change the background image in the css in the middle div parameters -->

      <div id="navtop">
      <!-- IMAGE goes here  -->
      <h1>Navigation top</h1>
      </div>

      <!-- You can change the size of the iframe here by changing the width and height-->
      <div id="frame">
      <iframe name="inlineframe" src="home01.html" width=600 height=600 marginwidth=0 marginheight=0 frameborder=0 scrolling=auto></iframe>
      </div>

      <div id="navleft">
      <!-- LINKS go here copy the entire link tag for a new link, change the link name -->
      <h1>Navigation</h1>
      <ul>
      <li><a href="home01.html" target="inlineframe">Home</a></li>
      <li><a href="dolls01.html" target="inlineframe">Dolls</a></li>
      <li><a href="other01.html" target="inlineframe">Other</a></li>
      <li><a href="about01.html" target="inlineframe">About</a></li>
      <li><a href="links01.html" target="inlineframe">Links</a></li>
      </ul>
      </div>

   </div>

</body>
</html>

Here is your CSS for just the index.html page. You may want to use a seperate one for the iframe pages.

Code: Select all
/* CSS MAIN PAGE */

/* The link colours are changed here */
A:link
{ text-decoration: none; color:#61053B; }
A:visited
{ text-decoration: none; color:#79335C; }
A:active
{ text-decoration: none; color:#79335C; }
A:hover
{ text-decoration: none; color:#E98DA9; background-color: #61053B;}

/* This is where the main properties are set, such as font colour and font size. These can be set in any div so you can override the body properties */
body
{ background: #C91E52;
  background-image: url(../img/layout.gif);
  background-repeat:no-repeat;
  background-position:center top;
  margin-top: 0;
  margin-bottom: 0;
  margin-left: 0;
  margin-right: 0;
  padding-left: 0;
  padding-right: 0;
  font-family: tahoma, arial;
  color: #6D0625;
  font-size: 8pt;
  text-align: center;
}

/* Modify your listing here. This is used in the side navigation, to list the links. */
ul {
  list-style-type: none;
  padding: 0px;
  margin: 0px;
}

/* Modify your listing here. This is used in the side navigation, to list the links. It uses an image. */
li {
  background-image: url(../img/star1.png);
  background-repeat: no-repeat;
  background-position: 0px 5px;
  padding-left: 14px;
}

/* The main div contains the header and frame div */
#main {
  text-align: left;
  width: 800px;
  height: 800px;
  margin: 0 auto;
  position: relative;
  background-image: url();
}

/* The middle div contains the iframe and navigation layers. */
#middle {
  width: 813px;
  height: 600px;
  margin: 0 auto;
  position: relative;
  padding-top:25px;
  padding-bottom:2px;
  padding-right:2px;
  padding-left:2px;
  background-image: url(../img/middle_bg1.png);
  background-repeat:no-repeat;
  background-position:left top;

}

/* This is the navigation top. You can add an image here or change the height */
#navtop {
  text-align: left;
  width: 209px;
  height: 400px;
  float: left;
  position: relative;
  background-image: url();

}

/* This is the navigation div layer. This contains the listed links to other pages. */
#navleft {
  text-align: left;
  width: 209px;
  height: 400px;
  float: left;
  position: relative;
  background-image: url();

}

#frame {
  float: right;
}

Do you know how to use inline frames, or iframes?

Okay, no problem.

An iframe loads a different page in a frame/window in another page. This is useful because you can load new information into an excisting page. Like: you load your page with dolls into the page that has your navigation links. If you did not use an iframe (which is also possible) you'd have to include the navigation links on ALL your pages.

So, you have two files: one is called index.html, and one is called main.css. We will load the content (dolls, about, bases, links etc.) into the index.html.

Code: Select all
<!-- You can change the size of the iframe here by changing the width and height-->
      <div id="frame">
      <iframe name="inlineframe" src="home01.html" width=600 height=600 marginwidth=0 marginheight=0 frameborder=0 scrolling=auto></iframe>
      </div>

This ^^ is the bit in the index.html where your content is going to be loaded into the iframe. The page it calls is called: 'home01.html'. So you need to make a page called home01.html, because that is the first page that will be loaded when the site is opened.

All you need is to make a file in notepad or textpad and save it as 'home01.html', you can do the same with the code for the main.css and the html in index.html.

So, in your folder called Blupen, you should now have:
folder: css
- main.css
folder: img
- layout.gif
- star1.png (if you want to use this img)
file: index.html
file: home01.html

Once you save all the code and all the stuff in the right folders, you can open the index.html in a browser and see how it all works. Also look at the code and the notes to see where you can change bits.

Don't despair!! It's really a lot simpler and straightforward than you'd think!

( I also just realised I forgot to take some stuff out of the css, like the main div, which does not appear in the html. See, the css tells the browser where to show the content and how to present it. Each div should also appear in the html page of the index, but the main div is missing in the index. See? You can just leave it out of the css file...)

Yay! You did it! Magi-ii-ic!

The last paragraph about the main div: You have to see the css and the html as two parts of a whole, two sides of a coin. They work together to show your site the way you want to.

On index.html there is a <div id="middle"> and on the css you'll find a line that says: #middle { ... with more stuff behind it. The stuff behind is actually tells the browser how large the div called 'middle' is supposed to be (width: 813px; height: 600px;), where it should appear(it is centered by: margin: 0 auto;) and what should be showing behind the text, on the background (background-image: url(../img/middle_bg1.png);) If you make an image called 'middle_bg1.png' it will be shown there. If you do no use an image called that, you can actually take this line out, as well as:
background-repeat:no-repeat;
background-position:left top;
Because these 3 lines all talk about what is showing in the background.

Now the div called main does not appear in the index.html, right? But it does show in the css:
Code: Select all
/* The main div contains the header and frame div */
#main {
  text-align: left;
  width: 800px;
  height: 800px;
  margin: 0 auto;
  position: relative;
  background-image: url();
}

So, you can delete that whole section on the main.css. Because you do not use the <div id="main"> in the index.html.

See how it works together?

The star1.png image is a tiny little image you can make, which will show up before any item in a list. A list is used in the navigation-bit on the index.html.

Code: Select all
      <div id="navleft">
      <!-- LINKS go here copy the entire link tag for a new link, change the link name -->
      <h1>Navigation</h1>
      <ul>
      <li><a href="home01.html" target="inlineframe">Home</a></li>
      <li><a href="dolls01.html" target="inlineframe">Dolls</a></li>
      <li><a href="other01.html" target="inlineframe">Other</a></li>
      <li><a href="about01.html" target="inlineframe">About</a></li>
      <li><a href="links01.html" target="inlineframe">Links</a></li>
      </ul>
      </div>

So before the link Home, Dolls etc, you can make a small image appear. If you make an image called:
Code: Select all
/* Modify your listing here. This is used in the side navigation, to list the links. It uses an image. */
li {
  background-image: url(../img/star1.png);
  background-repeat: no-repeat;
  background-position: 0px 5px;
  padding-left: 14px;
}

See it?

Now, the navigation also leads me to the next bit: your other pages.
<a href="dolls01.html" target="inlineframe"> is a link to an html file called dolls01.html, and it is calling it to open in 'inlineframe'. This is your iframe! Where the page home01.html opens when you first open the site.

So you can make all your pages for your dolls, your about page, your links etc by making a new html file.

You can use this code to start any of the pages off with:
Code: Select all
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<title>My First Site | Freedom Finally</title>
<!-- You can change the title if you like -->

<meta name="description" content="My First Site: Your Own Description Goes Here.">
<meta name="keywords" content="doll, dolls, dollz, digital dolls, pixel dolls, pixels, fashion, fantasy">
<!-- You can change the description text and keywords if you like -->

<!-- Note: the css for the pages inside the frame is different -->
<link href="css/frame.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
</head>

<body>
<div id="insideframe">

<h1>Title of your page</h1>
<table class="v3table">
<tr>
<!-- This cell is aligned at the top -->
<td width="100%" style="vertical-align:top;">
<h2>Links</h2>

<p>Put some links and buttons here. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Quisque consequat egestas orci vitae ultrices. Suspendisse potenti. Fusce blandit nisl eget odio elementum aliquet. Mauris tincidunt ultricies ornare. Nulla hendrerit ornare purus, in egestas mauris rhoncus ac.</p>

<p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Quisque consequat egestas orci vitae ultrices. Suspendisse potenti. Fusce blandit nisl eget odio elementum aliquet. Mauris tincidunt ultricies ornare. Nulla hendrerit ornare purus, in egestas mauris rhoncus ac.</p>

<!-- This is where the divider line is -->
<p class="line"><img src="img/line1.png" alt=""></p>

<h2>More links.</h2>

<p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Quisque consequat egestas orci vitae ultrices. Suspendisse potenti. Fusce blandit nisl eget odio elementum aliquet. Mauris tincidunt ultricies ornare. Nulla hendrerit ornare purus, in egestas mauris rhoncus ac.</p>

</td>
</tr>
</table>

</div>
</body>
</html>

and, if you paid a lot of attention, you will see this page calls for another css-file, called 'frame.css'! So you can style your iframe-pages differently.

Code: Select all
/* CSS FRAME PAGES */

/* The link colours are changed here */
A:link
{ text-decoration: none; color:#61053B; }
A:visited
{ text-decoration: none; color:#79335C; }
A:active
{ text-decoration: none; color:#79335C; }
A:hover
{ text-decoration: none; color:#E98DA9; background-color: #61053B;}

body
{ background-color: #E98DA9;
  margin-top: 0;
  margin-bottom: 0;
  margin-left: 0;
  margin-right: 0;
  padding-left: 10px;
  padding-right: 0;
  font-family: tahoma, arial;
  color: #6D0625;
  font-size: 9pt;
  text-align: left;
}

h1 {
  color:#6D0625;
  text-transform:uppercase}

h2 {
  color:#79335C;
  }

#insideframe {
  background-color: #E98DA9;

}

/* There are a few different tables used, the properties are set here */
.v3table {
  font-family: tahoma, arial;
  color: #61053B;
  font-size: 10pt;
  text-align:center;
  padding: 15px;
}

/* This is the table used for showing dolls */
.v3tabledoll {
  font-family: tahoma, arial;
  color: #61053B;
  font-size: 8pt;
  text-align: center;
}

/* This is the credit link light colour cell */
.doll1 {
  background: #E087BB;
  font-family: tahoma, arial;
  color: #E05AA8;
  font-size: 8pt;
  text-align:center;
}

/* This is the credit link dark colour cell */
.doll2 {
  background: #E05AA8;
  font-family: tahoma, arial;
  color: #E087BB;
  font-size: 8pt;
  text-align:center;
}

/* This is to center the line, don't forget to add the class if you add a line somewhere */
.line {
  text-align:center;
}

Or, you can change the css-link to 'main.css' and use what is on your original main.css file.
I know it is not ideal to give a beginner this much choice, but you will learn quicker by making mistakes... I guess I want to give you the opportunity to make your own mistakes. ;) Because we can fix whatever you break.

I haven't touched this in ages, and I don't know if I have the patience or mental capability at this time to finish it. :/ I LOVE the layout and really want it to be finished, but I'm barely functioning as it is.

*Sighs*

Thoughts? :/ I've been considering posting a topic to get someone to make the layout for me. =_=;

Okay! :) It should be fixed, now. You may have to right click+reload the page to see any difference. Uhm. Or to just be safe, do that.

Thank you so much, Dae. ; A;

Okay...Help!! D:

I don't know how to get it to go straight to my homepage when you first click the link or w/e, and I don't know how to get it to go to my main dolls page (it's in a separate folder), and I'd also like to figure out what that black stuff is behind the content or what have you and also figure out how to get the text to not be right against the layout image. :S

Thank you. ^^;

I managed to get the links to my existing pages to work! \o/ I just don't know how to get it to go straight to my main page. :/ Also, the text and black freewebs images behind the frame, for prettiness. >>
