Doll Shaming!

Post by Phoenigette » Mon Sep 07, 2015 7:43 pm

A lot like dog shaming... but for dolls.

We all started somewhere, and usually that somewhere was not a pretty place. So lets poke a little fun at our old selves

This is mine, though it was really hard to pick one  I have a lot more embarrassing skeletons in the closet than I remember.

Base

I had once shaded folds by using straight lines, and thought that inserting stray hairs everywhere would create a sense of realism. :C Most of my early dolls were also shaded with palettes from Photoshop's Colour Libraries, which were not palettes at all.

LOL LOL

I present: one of the many, many, many examples of my prolific/horrific stage. It was both of those things, simultaneously:

PRESENTING: The reason a lot of my dolls started wearing sandals

I think the base came from a site I could literally only find when base searching for my first doll (pictured above). I believe the site/doller was called unknoen? Something like that. Looked like "unknown" but I always pronounced it "un-no-in".

EDIT: I FOUND THE SITE!

Compare to: A more recent doll of Lina Yeah. That's the SAME character. Though I do, admittedly, need to doll her again sometime.

yes, apparently everyone else starting out dolling half decent dolls.

Let me present you with this though. Base by pinkland

Image

Sweaty underboobs, no definition to the hair and ... well... No need for shoes due to length of dress.

.. I still love this doll though. I learned a lot from it.

So these days I am often praised for my skill in dolling dolls with lightsabers, and this is because I have probably pixeled something around thirty thousand lightsabers at this point. It was not without its missteps.

this is definitely not my first doll. I am proud that my 13 (I think) year old self was smart enough to include jean details on the shorts even if the hair is very ...wtf. I wish photobucket had a date on when this was uploaded.

OH YES I HAVE TWO SPECIFICALLY THAT I WOULD WISH TO SHARE HAHA

Image

Self explanatory but I don't really like my oldest dolls lol I mean they're not super terrible (I don't think I ever did the skinpaint thing) but I started pixeling b/c I was mad at those kinds of things and I was like wow this is fun I should get over being a big baby :'')
Bases are by wish lol I butchered them :''''')

also i still use the line tool heavily hahahahahahaha

also yeah I didn't know you could make a bigger image so I drew on a layer straight on the image lol

Bats, is that a Jaeden base? The face reminds me a lot of her base's faces.

Dolls on the left were the originals, circa.... 2005? idr. Doll on the left was '08 remake. I'm not sure the remake was actually an improvement. Boy dolls were also suddenly scary once I "learned how to doll".

I forgot some things, like the struggle to blonde. :|

I was in college and was looking for any excuse to put off doing work so I'd churn out three or four dolls a day so I have hundreds of really crappy dolls to go through, but really I pretty much dolled one thing: Phin on ILCK bases. I have hundreds of Phin dolls and hundreds of dolls on ILCK bases. Why.

(spoilered for size)
bases by ILCK, packaged bliss, random doodles

Is anyone else really, really ashamed of what their dolls wore? I have dolls with Uggs and mini-skirts too, Ugh.

I still recognize you hair shading style Tals, even if everything else has changed.
I used to use the ILCK bases all the time. Love them so much.

*weeps bitterly* I was 12, my sense of humor was weird. I don't know who did the base, I think it was one of my sister sites but I'm just not sure.

Image

This is one of the most interesting dolls I could find in my archives... which is super depressing. It's on my own base, which makes it even more sad. Please (don't) note my scratch style shading which I thought I was REAL good at. Also I was a big fan of copying one side of the doll then pasting and flipping it so it was generally pretty symmetrical.

I discovered tooling simultaneously with xandorra's shiny dress tutorial (twas that tutorial that taught me tooling) and for a long time anything that wasn't insanely multishaded thanks to the foofers was boring. (Mind you I'm still fond of some insane colours and contrast...)

I know this thread has been quiet for a month, but I found some of my hilarious first few attempts at dolls and wanted to join in on the fun. It's amazing to see all the growth.

Image
Two of the bases are by Chama, the one on the lower left i have no idea. Could anyone help me out?

I used to think I was so great at pixeling black, and literally I wouldn't shade it, it would just be flat colour and then BAM SHINE. I bet if my dolls were alive, they would squeak every time they walked from all that plasticity looking material. Even the hair looked like plastic!
My pallets were ridiculously dull, too! x _x Yikes

Pro pixel artist 10/10 right here.

Love this thread. Plus any excuse to delve into my archives.

These were my first ever dolls, followed by when I discovered tools, then my first attempt at pixel shading :D
