Art Programs

Post by QuinnKitty » Tue Mar 07, 2017 10:44 pm

What art programs do you guys use to doll on?
I've always been curious and I always enjoy learning about more programs that have the pixel tool.

For a long time I was strictly just MS paint.
Now I've moved on and between My paint, Medibang pro or Alpaca fire.
I do have Adobe photoshop Cs5.1 but Idk how to use it honestly for pixeling/dolling lol
I am back from my Hiatus.

I use Photoshop CS4 these days for just about everything, including dolling (for that I just use the pencil tool at one pixel). Before I got CS4 I used Photoshop 4.0, but that eventually stopped working, so I had to move up. The really weird part was when I finally made the switch to Windows XP and 4.0 mysteriously rose from the dead and started hijacking all my files.

I did spend a few years in between 4.0 ceasing to work and getting CS4 where I used GIMP, but I found it kind of frustrating to use at that time for dolling, or anything else for that matter. The layers didn't work how I liked them to. I have used more recent versions of it as well -- I keep it on my laptop because it's less resource-intensive and also free -- and it's got a lot better since then.

I use GIMP 2 at the moment though I am currently exclusively pixel shading

I still use MS paint.

It's weird, because I do all of my other art in Photoshop CC, and I'm fairly good with basically any similar art program around. and yet I feel most comfortable doing pixel art in ye old paint.

(honestly, I admire people who can do pixel stuff in PS, because it just seems so nice and efficient)

I use PS, but for a little bit I used Paint tool Sai. Which I do NOT recommend.

Paint Tool SAI is the WORST for pixel art. For me at least.
And it doesn't seem capable of saving transparent backgrounds?

No it doesn't. Which was my biggest problem with it.

I use Photoshop CC. In the past I used PSP7, but when I got my first Wacom it came with Photoshop Elements and I made the switchover. I admire everyone who can use a software that doesn't have layers. The non-destructive editor in me cries every time I reach for the eraser tool instead of a layer mask.

I use paint for pixeling and paint.net for transparency/staging/text. I just find that more complicated programs aren't fast enough for pixeling. Literally all I need to do is pick a color and draw with no hassle, but what takes one step in paint takes four in other programs.

I use Photoshop CS2. Although it's not working very well right now. I'm not sure if it's my laptop or the program. Probably both since my laptop is old and CS2 hasn't updated in forever.
