Adobe CS5 line tool issues

Post by kesra » Fri Oct 21, 2011 10:01 pm

Alright so I'm trying to use my line tool but I can't get a solid line out of it. Furthermore, the line isn't very solid. I can't find the settings to switch that out. I've done it before but I had to re-install it due to switching computers.

So here's the top tool options thing:

The orange shaded in portion is how I think I changed it before but I can't click on any of the little icon thingies. So is there something else I need to switch in order to make these choices with this tool?

Furthermore when I make a line, any line, it'll create another layer.

Like this:

Help?

Take a look at your tool options bar (first screenshot): When working with these tools you can choose between two main options (actually there are three but I don't know the third one):
VECTOR shapes, the one you've selected, and PATHS, the one right next to it.

When using vector shapes each shape will have its own layer by default. That's why your layer palette has got so crowded. To prevent this from happening you can use the options you've highlighted in orange, which will be available once you've created your first shape.

So you can follow these steps:
1) Pick your tool and make sure you've selected vector shapes. The options to the right shouldn't be available yet.

2) Make your first line. If by solid you mean a straight line, press and hold SHIFT in your keyboard and click and drag in the desired direction. You should have a straight line by now. (This works fine for vertical, horizontal and diagonals)

3) If you want to add more lines to that same layer, check the top tool bar and the options that were previously off should be ready to use.

REMEMBER: If you want to add more lines to the one you have, that line has to be selected, i.e. the thin lines that show the path must be visible. If, by any chance they aren't use the tool with the arrow icon, right below the pen tool. Usually you get your last path selected just by clicking on the tool, but if you want to pick a different one just move the cursor on top of the shape you want and click, the paths will be visible again and you'll be able to edit that particular shape layer.

P.S.: I didn't want to sound too condescending or go into too many technical details when doing this, sorry if I sounded that way. I've tried to provide you with images for each step detailing each part so it's clear. Hope this works for you.
