Doll of the Month December '08!

Postby Em » Wed Apr 01, 2009 11:06 pm

This month's winner is Grafiketgrafok!

Seeing that the piece was inspired by another artist, did you take elements of their art and add your own flair to it, or did you recreate one of their pieces? Could you point us in the direction of the particular piece that inspired you the most?
I never copy or recreate exactely the work I love, I guess it's way over my head. I actually like to do it my own way. For that precise doll I was definitely seduced by that flowing dark dress with ghost faces, I begun to pixel that without knowing if I ever could finish it! I made the faces and folds a little different and added a hand to make it more... dramatic! Does it work? Very Happy I chose "Fallen" because it was the most inspiring piece for me, I can hardly explain why - maybe because of the underworld theme, kinda mystic work. But I usually prefer to choose "incomplete works" (when you can't see the entire body and have to imagine it).

As this doll is very detail-oriented, where did you start? Did you have a good idea in mind of what you wanted your final piece to be or did you just add things as you went along?
I first drew the line of the dress... It wasn't as long as I thought but it took me quite a long time. Then I started to pixel in a quite unusual way for me. Imagine that you pixel just like you paint with a brush: several small touches of color in very similar tones from lightest to darkest. It was tough to integrate the faces correctly, which I'm not quite sure I did! ^^ Then I did the hair and had enough of it!
I had a quite precise idea of what I wanted, which decided me to do it. But I had added and modified a few things on the way (like the hand and the angle of one of the heads).

What area did you spend on perfecting the most?
Definitely the dress. It was the main part of the doll, if the dress wasn't good enough the doll would be a total failure. I tried to work on the folds because it's one of the things I suck at.

As for your palettes, do you create new palettes for each particular doll, or use palettes you've already made, or do you use palettes someone else made?
I always create my palettes for each doll I make, except for palette contests of course!

Looking at it now, would you say there's anything you wish you'd done differently, or anything you want to change now?
Yes! The hair is not really good, it should be more flowy and not that dark. And some of the details of the dress could have been better (the hand for instance). I'm such a lazy person.

Anyway, I thank you all for this award. I never thought I would have one here and there were so many beautiful dolls this month I can't believe you chose me. Thank you so much, I'll cherish it! Very Happy
