Princess Bubble Gum in Rehearsals: R2 (Blood Inside)

Any work that is incomplete, and needs a little critique to improve!

My only CC is that the darkest color of her dress needs to be blended with the second darkest, right now it's just a wee bit too much. If you add a color in between it should look just fine.

I'd add in another shadow shade. I also think you should use Naomi's glitter tutorial. It would be perfect for this

Oops, I should have mentioned I wasn't quite done shading the pink and just wanted to post an update before bed so there was something to make sure I was on the right track.

I think all the shades are down now, though.

Edit: And where's that glitter tutorial?

Got to shading the skirt! Added the sprinkles layer so we can see the general effect of once it's done, but I AM shading with the white details hidden in photoshop. Candy stripes on the sleeves are also hidden until I finish the gown itself and start on all the details together, but I did get the semi-transparency on the sleeves done.

Also, slowly removing the glitter as I work on the skirt. It'll either all be gone, or else replaced by the glitter tutorial eventually. We'll see how I feel about it once everything's shaded.

After looking at this a bit (now that you've shaded the full body), I have a couple of suggestions...Hope you don't mind, I "redlined" in (not in red though) some suggested light sourcing additions. Namely, just a little bit of suggestion to give her a bit more depth.

Image

Blue is a great color for shadows, but you don't even need to use BLUE, it can just be a color that's considerably more blue than the main colors of the object you're shading (like if you're doing light/pinkish skin, just going more toward a bluish purple helps!) I think you pretty much got that but I went 1 shade drastically darker/bluer on my suggestion just to show you how much depth it adds. (If it helps, when I shade skin, I usually do all the skin shading, and THEN go back with a shadow color that adds that extra depth after I've figured out how I want everything to look. It makes all the difference!)

Also, I like how you did the light sourcing on the bodice, but the layers of the dress (under each set of scallops) have good depth themselves (Your skirt palette is nice!) but in contrast had no cast shadow. To give the illusion that each layer is on top of the one beneath it, I added a shadow that's a couple pixels wide. And, I deepened the shadow beneath the mask (which was still a bit hard to see) - as you can see, where the object the shadow is cast on recedes, the shadow "elongates" (which is why it gets that kind of "pointy" shadow where the dress folds inward). Anyway, just some minor suggestions to help you along, as you're doing quite fabulously already!

One more thing...I think maybe you might want to make the mask on the portrait SLIGHTLY bigger....it seems bigger on the fullbody compared to the size of the face. Don't think it would be too much trouble if you haven't shaded it yet to add a couple layers of pixels to the edges.

I'll see what I can do about the mask later (that's gonna be A LOT of pearls to move and redo xP, but I'll do it).

I'll put the portrait on hold, though, and see what I can do about fixing the fullbody.

OKAY, updated with the changes and half-finished hair from last night.

I tried to add more of the blue shade to the skin, though I didn't add it to the far side of her face because I didn't like how dramatic it looked. The portrait mask is a smidge bigger, and there's better shadows under the fullbody mask and skirt layers.

Debb also had some C/C on the fullbody skin palette, so that's updated too.

So, I was finally able to get back to work on her tonight!

And damn, I got a lot more done than I expected to. Just need to shade her clothes and the portrait portion will be done.

Open for C/C on what I've got done so far.

HELP! I'm trying to work out the composition of the entry. The options I have so far are:
ImageImageImage
Fullbody Base Portrait Base

1. Overlapping a bit, to cover up the bottom of the arm and line up the chin gap of the portrait with the elbow of the fullbody.

2. Portrait pushed over a bit more to give more room for text.

3. And then flipping the positions to line up the arms together.

1 & 3 are my top favorites, but I'm still not sure...

I personally like 1 and 3 the best too. I just wanted to pop in and say she's looking great! Maybe playing with your text will make it apparent which composition works the best :)

You're not really looking at the total composition of the entry unless you're considering the text. If you have big text, none of these compositions are going to work out right, you'll need more space between your entries.

Your particular entry has a bit of a challenge because her skirt is huge, which doesn't leave a lot of space for text. An alternative that you could play with is having the portrait be lower and actually having the text over the portrait's head, potentially in a semi circle type format if you can manage. It's a more unconventional composition though.

^Agree, which is why I chose #2, but you could even move the portrait out a little farther IMO. :)

Okay, I think I have final portrait position and text?

I was trying to find something nice and decorative that looked both sweet and royal, but I couldn't really find anything. So I just started going through the fonts I already have, and I decided on Lucida for now. Not sure if it's sticking, though.

The font is being super difficult for this entry.

For anyone who went straight to the newest post:

OKAY ROUND 2!

I'm kinda not entirely sure what I want to do conceptually yet, but I feel like I need to get something quick or else it's gonna be hell.

So, the idea I had earlier for what she's done was an Elizabeth Bathory style princess who kills her servants, except she ACTUALLY bathes in their blood.

And that's an important aspect, because the image I have in my mind for my entry is her IN the bath tub. And I really, REALLY want to use that image somehow in this pageant.

So Idea 1: Her in the bath tub, filled with the blood with the bodies of the victims in the shadows. With a description of something like "Literally bathes in the blood of her enemies."

OR

Idea 2: Her in the act of killing a servant (poison or strangling or something), with a description of "Murder," AND THEN use the bathtub scene for where she is "ironically" killed in Round 3.

Any thoughts?

I'm actually leaning towards Idea 2 the more I think about it...
