Larger Project [Looking for Moderate C/C]

Post by Sioraiocht » Mon Dec 12, 2016 9:34 pm

Okay, so basically. I'm working on a doll of Scarlet (again), using one of StormNicki's bases. It's been eons since I've done a larger sized doll, so I'm looking for a little help. Basically, this is the character design that I'm following.
Image
Problem A, I can't draw weapons to save my life and don't know how to even begin trying.
Problem B, I can't doll chainmail very well at all.
Problem C, ....shading is going to be a huge issue, I'm not used to trying to show different fabrics and such anymore. Any advice would be appreciated. This is the doll so far (and I apologize for lack of transparency, my Photoshop was acting up again x.x)

i like what you have blocked in so far!! that's a really dynamic pose and i think you're brave for trying to use it! i'm bad for picking very straight on stuff, hahaha.

for the weapons, try blocking it out into simple shapes first. then add the curves and details. reference up!!

i think the line work you have for her arm bandages is really nice so far :)

for chain mail, maybe try to create a little pattern of the links, shade them individually and place/ offset them around the shape of her body. then maybe do another layer with additional shading to really contrast and bring shadows out?

I never thought about doing a pattern overlay for the chainmail actually. o.o Normally I would try to make shiny-looking lines and call it a day. xD Definitely worth a shot though. I'm kind of excited to try that.

As far as the weapons go, I do have a butt-ton of reference materials for the daggers in question, but I feel my issue is going to be getting the placement right on her body. I have the throwing daggers to contend with, the 4 at her thigh, 2 at her back and 1 in each boot. I'm also considering having her like...sitting on her sheath since I'm horrible at doing any kind of simplistic backgrounds.

first off nice base size, plenty of room to include all of the characters accessories
i usually overutilize google images when dealing with fabrics its gotten me through everything from feathers to pleathers lol
a pattern is a great solution for chainmail (might need to experiment with that meself)
and i love the idea of her sitting on her sheath
great stuff so far C:

Thanks to AxxKat and Dragyn, I got to put a little more work into her, so this is our current state at the moment.

(Yes, I shade hair in blue. xD Helps me with contrast.)
Still planning on she sheath, but I had a random idea that, at least I think, looks cool. xD Though that means I'm going to have to put something there for her to be drawing on.

it's looking good so far. You might want to keep in mind that leather belts and buckles have a certain width to them. You could bump out the edges of your belt, her leg tie, and the wraps on her boot for more interest
