Hmm... lab rat?

Post by MelianAlcarime » Sun Jan 14, 2018 12:00 am

I made this for Pax over at Subeta of her scientist character who is working in one of those creepy laboratories to support his wife. I've never really tackled this kind of scene before in pixel or painting, so this was brandy-new to me. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with how it came out. I redrew the desk and computer half a million times because I couldn't get the silly perspective right, but I'm glad that I did. It was really way too wonky before.

I pretty much never say this, but for right now I don't really want any critique on it. It's the first quality work I've produced in over half a year, so I'm not ready to admit its flaws yet. :p

The base is by Meo24 (it's really such an awesome base for these kinds of scenes. Sadly there's only a few poses, so it takes a lot of editing.)

What a beautiful doll! That background is amazing :D You did a wonderful job on it. The desk looks great and I love how you pixeled that tube thingie. And so many lovely little details scattered throughout the piece! Those discarded pages are a nice touch. Great job on the lightsources as well! The doll itself is beautiful too: the hair is great and I really like how you used the lightsources on the clothing.

Overall: lovely work! You should be proud of it :)

I really like the lighting as well! The details are great, and I think you really captured a mood in this piece.

OMG Thank you guys so much! :D Your comments mean a lot to me.

I really got discouraged around last August when I entered a quality slump. I was trying to reach the next plateau and felt like I just kept sliding backwards. I hope this one ends up being my "breakout". Interestingly, this actually took me less time than my Pokemon Pageant entries. Except for when I had to keep fixing the silly desk and computer, I really had more of an idea what I needed to do.

THAT FLOOR THOUGH. At the time I think I was so sick of pixelling the floor that it escaped my mind that it needed both shadows and to be affected by my light sources, especially the bacta tank. I may end up going back to that later on and fixing it up.

This is adorable! I absolutely LOVE the colors. I love that its not all white and like a hospital or what you'd think a science lab looks like. I love that you chose the dark colors with the neon. The color pallet is beautiful. Your detail in the background is impeccable too!

Sooo with everything going on I kind of forgot I had a thread over here. Oops.

Lex: Thank you so much! That computer was a pain in the tuckus because of its odd shape (especially in perspective) so I'm really glad you like it. :)

Chewy: Thanks! I'm usually too much of a wimp to approach dark colors and harsh lights, so this one was super fun to work on.

Blu: Thank you, thank you. :) Small details can be annoying if done near the end (when you're in the "please just let me be DONE" phase), so I work on them more toward the middle.

AxxKat: Hey, you say that, but I only seem to be decent at backgrounds in pixels. Every time I try to paint a scene, it comes out awful. :p Thanks AxxKat!
